When autumn is nearing, Rosemary Verey would start with the symptoms to ease the gardener into the time of mists and mellow fruitfulness. The month of September is the beginning of autumn, when the Mother Nature gives a final touch to the quietly downing winter. And alerts you to prepare programmer or complete campaign for the autumn activity.
Get ready to take the cuttings of your doubtfully hardy and tender favorites like, verbenas, diascias, felicias, argyranthemums and pelargoniums, in the garden. You can also include violas, rock roses, dianthus and fuchsias, as these flowers will fill your garden when the tulips are out of season. Make sure to go on the mist bench and note down the name, number and date for your cuttings. If mist facilities cannot be availed, you can very well use pots with polythene bag and see to that the top conserves moisture.
Hardwood cuttings are really easy work. Have a well drained shady bed where you can line out 10-12 inches of cuttings, with half of their length buried. If you need extra shrubs, you can keep these round the parent plant. By the late spring, these cuttings will have more roots so that it can be moved to their permanent zone. You can easily do it with ribes, spiraea, privet, rue, honeysuckle, philadelphus, weigela, hebes and willows.
You can gather the seeds till September. Collect the seeds in the paper bags and change them into sealed envelopes and use your fridge to store them. You can also sow a few in drills and watch out for slugs eating the saplings.
You can order for new bulbs every august. Choose the ones that ring the changes and you can keep up a selection mode each year. Planting prepared hyacinths in September will yield you flowers for Christmas. Paper white narcissus works wonderful for forcing. Keep them on a flat bowl surface in a sandy gravel mixture and keep aside in the light. They will bloom within 6 weeks of time and at times earlier. Planting such plants in intervals will give you a succession to enjoy their strong aroma in your garden. With the new bulbs, you can distinguish them by different beds, each with a color theme.

Make sure you have got enough mulching material, leafmould, mushroom compost and cocoa shell, so that you can make a cover the borders. Do not forget to label the dahlias prior to frost cut them down. Further, dig and store it in safely for the next year plantation. You also have the choice to plan to clip the yew hedges.
Prepare your greenhouses for the season. Cleaning, disinfecting, painting, mending should be finished before the tender saplings are brought in.
